We called the Examination and Assessment Authority regarding the marking of your 2007 UE Section E Task 1 today, and Mr. Cliff Hall (one of the staff responsible for the marking guidelines of UE PSWS paper) made the following reply:

He has personally informed the markers that:
If the student paragraph contains the 500th word and then carries on to complete a sentence or their paragraph or idea then the marker is required to read the whole idea/sentence or paragraph as long as it is around 510-520 words.

If the letter continues to around 600 or more words then the extra 80 or more words will be ignored including the complimentary closing. So the readability and organization (closing/format) and word limit+balance marks will be affected. Only the parts exceeding the 500 or so word limit will not be marked so any content points in there will be ignored.

Other presentation marks: The Text type (formality and appropriacy of text), persuasive impact and language will not be greatly affected if the word limit has been exceeded as these marks are based on the whole letter.

The exam authority will have a meeting today (Thursday 19th April 2007) and may issue a Press release a little later regarding this matter to help students feel less anxious about their UE PSWS.

Mr. Hall mentioned that the paper is trying to make students follow strict and clear instructions to imitate life outside of school ?Practical Skills ?in the past students have gained C or D grades just by copying large chunks of data which is not what the HKEAA wants to encourage. So, similar to last year PSWS paper ?they put in strict guidelines/rubrics. Last year task was even harder as there were word limits for each paragraph. This was done in hopes of changing students mentality ?to be clear about what they are required to do and to follow instructions.

Mr. Hall also mentioned that all information or procedures regarding the exam should be gained through personally calling or contacting the HKEAA Assessment Department and not through other sources, e.g. via the Internet, as there is a chance that the source is unreliable.
